Weekly Update:   Wednesday Nov 25, 2009

Star Orchard has closed for the 2009 season. Our remaining McIntosh and Cortland apples can be purchased at Woodman's Supermarket in Appleton or Larry's Piggly Wiggly in Kaukauna until Christmas. We want to thank everyone who came out to our orchard in 2009 and helped make it our most successful year. We plan several changes for the 2010 season to make your visit more pleasant. We are removing some unneeded trees so you can more easily access the Wealthies and Paula Reds. We are planning on planting more  Zestars either in 2010 or 2011. they were developed by the Honeycrisp people. They are very similar to Honeycrisp in texture, size and color but with better flavor however they to not  store nearly as well. They ripen around Sept. lst. We also need more plum trees, more signs in the orchard and smoother roads. We hope to reopen again by Labor Day 2010.

Star Orchard

Star Orchard is an apple orchard located on the east side of the Fox Valley in Northeast Wisconsin in a very small community called Hollandtown. Star Orchard is located 15 minutes east of Appleton and 30 minutes south of Green Bay - please view our map link. The orchard was planted in 1962, however, many new varieties haven been added over the years. It is not unusual to see three generations of family members spending several hours on a beautiful fall day picking apples, both for eating and cooking.

We are primarily a "Pick Your Own" orchard, but also feature a sales room with pre-picked apples, pasteurized cider and honey which is produced from beehives located in the orchard. Our salesroom also features an assortment of jams, jellies, dressings, mustard, maple syrup, assorted gourds,  caramel apples, caramel apple dip and many types of squash. Wilmar Chocolates of Appleton make our caramel apples using our apples and their  secret homemade recipe. They are available Friday thru Sunday or until we run out.

While McIntosh and Cortland are  the most popular varieties picked by our customers, please scroll down this page to see some of the other varieties we offer. Located just 15 minutes east of Appleton and 30 minutes south of Green Bay, Star Orchard is very accessible from almost anywhere. For more specific directions, please view our map link.

Star Orchard

New Varieties and New Plantings of Old Varieties
( Not Available to "Pick Your Own")
  • Honey Crisp - We feel this is one of the best apple varieties in the apple world today. Introduced in the 1990's by the University of Minnesota, this large, exceptionally crisp, juicy apple has instantly become a customer favorite. You won't see many of these in supermarkets for years to come since demand far exceeds supply.

  • Paulared - This all-purpose August apple is similar to McIntosh. It has become so popular that we have removed all our other August apple varieties.

  • Jonagold - A cross between Jonathon and Golden Delicious. This large firm sweet-tart apple has become one of the most popular apples in Europe. We believe it will do as well in the Fox Valley area. We highly recommend this last season apple for it's superior flavor and keeping quality.

  • Mollies Delicious - Better known as a Molly, this large apple has the Delicious shape but has it's own distinctive flavor and is very snappy for an early September apple. It is not a good keeper and not usually found in supermarkets, yet it is a local favorite.

  • Fameuse - Better known as as a Snow Apple. It is an old variety with white flesh and believed to be one of the parents of the modern McIntosh. We don't have many of these.

Pumpkins

Although we are primarily an apple orchard we do have three acres of pumpkins, gourds and squash. These crops start ripening in late September and are sold on a "Pick Your Own" basis or pre-picked.
